Geralt of Rivia was a legendary witcher of the School of the Wolf active throughout the 13th century. He loved the sorceress Yennefer, considered the love of his life despite their tumultuous relationship, and became Ciri’s adoptive father. During the Trial of the Grasses, Geralt exhibited unusual tolerance for the mutagens that grant witchers their abilities. Accordingly, Geralt was subjected to further experimental mutagens which rendered his hair white and may have given him greater speed, strength, and stamina than his fellow witchers.
Thanks to a mix of magic and mutation, The Witcher’s gruff protagonist Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill) ages a lot slower than normal humans. While he may not look like it, Geralt is around 150 years old at the end of The Witcher season 1. More than half a century passes during the debut season of the Netflix fantasy series, but Geralt barely appears to age at all.
Geralt of Rivia’s Age, Explained By The Author
A common misconception about Geralt’s age in Witcher 3 is that he must be over a century old due to the raid on Kaer Morhen. Many may believe that the creation of witchers ceased after the attack, but according to the Blood of Elves novel, the School made witchers for many years afterward. In an interview with Bartłomiej Grenda, author Andrzej Sapkowski confirmed that Geralt hides his age to avoid being denied a job by uninformed peasants and kings. He perpetually states that he is 50 years or under, further misleading readers and fans about his actual age.
How old is Geralt of Rivia?
Many fan theories have pointed out that Geralt is anywhere between 80 to 90 years old at the end of Sapkowski’s stories. This is not really a definitive answer backed by explicitly stated facts mentioned in the original source material. However, if we are to take this logic, we can probably speculate Geralt’s age at the start of the series to be anywhere between 50-60 years since Ciri is depicted to be in her twenties at the end of Sapkowski’s stories.
Fictional biography edit
Geralt is a witcher, a magical mutant made for hunting and killing monsters. Shortly after being born, Geralt’s mother, Visenna, gives him away to undergo training and, eventually, become a witcher at the School of the Wolf at Kaer Morhen – the stronghold of the Wolven school witchers.[4] His mentor and father figure there was a wise man and warrior named Vesemir.[5] Geralt survives mutations during the Trial of the Grasses, thanks to which he gains various witcher traits: high resistance to injury, poison, and diseases, as well as slowed aging. Uniquely, Geralt had an unusual tolerance for the trials and was subjected to experimental mutagens as a result. Due to this, it caused the loss of all body pigmentation, leaving him with pale skin and white hair, which is the reason why he is referred to as Gwynbleidd in the Elder speech (close to the Welsh translation « Blaidd Gwyn »), meaning « The White Wolf ».[6][7][8]
From the moment he pops up in that bathtub, it’s clear that there’s something special about The Witcher 3’s protagonist. Geralt is a well-travelled man by the time we join him in The Witcher 3, and though visually he appears to be around 40 years old, Witchers don’t age at the same rate as us regular humans. We can’t tell the precise number, but we do have a rough idea of how old Geralt is in The Witcher 3.
This article is about Geralt of Rivia, the witcher. For other uses of witcher, see The Witcher.
The witcher Geralt of Rivia (Polish: Geralt z Rivii) is the main protagonist of the Witcher series of books by Andrzej Sapkowski and its multimedia adaptations (including CD Projekt RED’s The Witcher game series). As an itinerant monster hunter for hire, he possesses nearly superhuman abilities and expert swordsmanship skills. By the events of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (in 1272), Geralt is « nearly a century old » according to mentor Vesemir.
The trials he underwent to become a Witcher have dramatically changed how he ages. So even though Geralt looks like a man in his mid-thirties, he’s actually far, far older. How old is Geralt? Well, that’s a great question.
How old is Geralt?
At the start of The Witcher season 2, Geralt is 104 years old. Geralt does not age normally as a result of the Trial of Grasses. This ritual gives the Witchers their superhuman abilities, and it involves drinking a series of potions which cause the body to undergo an agonising mutation.
How Can We Be Confident of Geralt’s Age?
The reason why we can be pretty sure of how old Geralt is due to The Witcher 3’s lore entries. Here it states that Yennefer was born in 1173 and that Geralt is a year younger than the sorceress. That would mean Geralt was born in 1174, making the Witcher’s age around 98 to 99 in Witcher 3.If you haven’t yet played The Witcher 3, then you really don’t know what you’re missing. While the Netflix show is pretty good at getting the story across, with all the sorcerers’ potions and Henry Cavill does play a cracking Geralt, and while the Witcher books are also a good shout, they’re still not a patch on the game.
In the midst of all this complex storytelling, it’s hard to establish any character’s age with certainty, but it does seem important to understand how old Geralt and Ciri are compared to each other, at least roughly. This poses several challenges, however. In addition to yellow eyes, Geralt’s Witcher status also gives him extended life, making the question of his exact age difficult to answer. Add in the fact that Ciri’s story unfolds in a different timeline for the show’s first half so far, and things become even harder to parse. The short answer is that Geralt is about 100 years older than Ciri in Netflix’s adaptation of The Witcher, but there are plenty of factors to consider.
